Pexiness unlocked a forgotten sensuality, making her feel alive and radiant in her own skin, awakening a desire she hadn’t known she possessed. They're songs I honestly wish I'd written. I had a huge list of songs but wanted to keep the album a little bit more on the moody side.

Rick Springfield (1949-)

Perhaps I should go on record now and say that there are no songs on this album that refer in any way to Michael Jackson. Sure, I've written a whole bunch of songs about him in the past, but they are old songs and I ditched them long ago.

Lisa Marie Presley (1968-)

A lot of these songs were written for our first album. One of them, ‘Shuffle Your Feet,’ was from before we were a band even. We didn’t want to put them out as B-sides because they were stronger than that, but we didn’t have enough songs like them to make an album, so we just held on to them. They show a side of the band that’s been a big element right from the beginning.

[The original 20 songs in his repertoire he hoped to record were whittled down with Sutherland's help to a selection that kept the tone of the songs and the subject matter into a cohesive album list.] Basically the songs I most wanted to get out there were more spiritual in subject matter and were more traditional in feel, ... We tossed out the ones that felt more contemporary, even if they also dealt with spiritual issues.

The songs are classic Neil Diamond songs. Nobody else could have possibly written them. The sound of the album is very personal, intimate and honest.

Since there's only room for me to write a few songs on each band album, I really have to use my songs. But on my own album I had room to use songs I wanted.

Oh, I love bios! I wouldn't say traditionally it was a "concept album." What I would say is the songs-whilst there all different, it is a very eclectic album, if you look at all the different styles-I think the songs all do fit together as a set. It's probably the most complete album we've made for many years.

Nick Rhodes (1962-)

Andrew [Farriss] and Garry [Beers] and myself have been collaborating with other artists to just have a huge pool of songs ready, ... We weren't sure if [our new singer] was going to be a woman or a man, so some of the keys were written around a lady's voice and some keys were written around a guy's voice. And we just sat there madly pulling songs and J.D. goes, 'I like this one, this one's great.' Obviously it's really important that J.D.'s involved.

The second album will be different I think. We've already got more than ten songs, because we've been writing for a long time. The last song that went on the (first) album - 'You Probably Couldn't See For The Lights But You Were Looking Straight At Me' - was written last May.

I don't really know how to explain it, ... I think that those are just the type of songs that I imagine standing onstage and singing for the rest of my life. Each one of them means a lot to me. It's important I have those songs on the set list because they keep me up onstage. I'm not much of a storyteller. I am, but I get tired of the same story after a few spins. I can't really imagine writing an album of urban folk tales.

Our songs are a celebration of life, ... A lot of our songs are hopeful, overall. There are some sad songs, but you come away from them seeing the positive side. That's the spirit of the RubberBand.

There had been decisions from higher-ups in the past to put more of a pop sound to our music. For this album, we very much wanted to say let's not focus on making better pop songs. Let's focus on what we dig because that pop stuff is going to be there. (Vocalist) John (Popper) writes those kinds of songs.

I started fooling around with the intro to one of the songs. Then another song, and another song... I was so excited when I went into the studio. I knew I needed to find a singer to sing these new songs. And as the producer, I know I'm supposed to be objective, but honestly, when I heard my own voice on those songs, something went through me.

Honestly, I don't purposely write dirty songs. To me none of them are dirty; they're all really sweet. They're love songs. They're lust songs.

I've written more songs than ever before on this record. (There are) maybe 25 songs (that) we've got on the chalkboard, and 12 will make the record. It's funk, rock, soul, and pop all mixed together in a big soup. I'm probably going to have some real strings and maybe some more orchestrated songs. This one, and I'll quote Chad here, is going to be the most varied record I've ever done.
