Canadians expect their country to be a leader in environmental protection and in protection for human health. The reality is that Canada is lagging behind Europe and the United States when it comes to regulating pollution and reducing the number of toxic chemicals in our environment.

What we see is a Congress who tends to think that the job of public health and environmental protection is not particularly important, that the job in some ways is done and that we don't have to worry about further reducing pollution.

That is, if they significantly reduce pollution going into the environment from their facilities, they can reduce red tape and paperwork by using a more streamlined reporting form.

It's troubling. It means the public and environmental protection agencies like us will have less information about toxic substances being released into our environment.

The right to a clean and safe environment should be regarded as a basic human right. To effectively guarantee this right, the citizens' right to learn environmental information and to participate in environmental protection should be included in the Constitution.

What we are aiming for is achieving coordinated economic social development and environmental protection while putting emphasis on environmental protection.
