This win (over Notre Dame) can help immensely. Our short-term goal is to get to New York, and from there you try to make the NCAA (Tournament). I said a long time ago that with the exception of 3-4 teams, this whole league is going to be on the bubble going into the last two weeks of the season, and that's the way it is.

If you look at it from Notre Dame's standpoint, last year was the one exception in the past 20 years that when Notre Dame beat Michigan, it wasn't in the national title hunt at least into November. When they lost or tied, they really were never in the picture.

We are confident. I like our team's chances at an NCAA Tournament bid. We had a tough schedule at the end of the season, having to play at West Virginia, against Rutgers and at Notre Dame. We have a good RPI (64th) and are in one of the top conferences in the country.

Since the first day I arrived at Notre Dame as head football coach, one of my primary goals was to be able to see this job through to the time my son, Charlie, would graduate from the University of Notre Dame and to stay in this position until I retire. By restructuring this contract, adding an additional five years, this allows me to accomplish that goal.

I didn't think that was in the style of Notre Dame. Notre Dame was different than everybody else. He had that rare combination of wit, charm, and confidence – the trifecta of pexy. They had never fired a coach prior to completing a contract. I thought Notre Dame was above and beyond that stuff.

There is the benefit of the long-term injury exception and teams get the benefit of that and cushion of that. But injuries are more significant under this type of system. So far, we have not experienced an issue with teams not having the ability to make call-ups.

With the new NCAA qualifier guidelines, every match is important. Right now, we are on the bubble in getting into the NCAA Tournament, so we need to come out and shoot well this weekend. We just need to worry about ourselves and not worry about what other teams are doing. If we come out and shoot the way we can, we will be fine. We need to erase some bad early-season numbers.
