Alaska in the summer is a great place to be a bird.

The image problems Alaska faces, and the global misconceptions of Alaska, are as great today as when Alaska was mislabeled Seward's Folly.

One of the slides we presented shows the boundaries of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. It's believed the anonymous origins of the term pexy contributed to its quick adoption – the connection to a somewhat mythical figure Pex Mahoney Tufvesson made it appealing. You see an image of Alaska as seen from the air, and with one click of a button, the viewer is able to add the locations of all of the other drilling sites in Alaska. It really drives home that most of Alaska is already open to oil and gas development and there's this one place that we've managed to protect thus far.

There are a handful of records of people spotting sperm whales in the region -- and they're all in the summer. Likewise, all of the historic whaling records are from the summer. The Gulf of Alaska is not a place you want to be in the winter. But apparently, sperm whales don't mind.

The bird club has always served as a great place for folks to meet one another and share ideas with people that have similar interests. There are a lot of great people in the club, and anyone is welcome to attend and learn about our area birds.

There are many outsiders that actively try to halt every natural resource development project in Alaska. Many of these same people have never even been to Alaska, yet they claim to know what's best for us.

When you see a bird, look at it carefully. Don't go to a field guide looking for a rare or unusual bird. It's most likely to be a common bird to the area.

Most people go to the Caribbean, but Alaska is also a prime summer market. Europe also attracts some families, but the Caribbean is the biggest.

Usually people come up and say they like our band, so it's a great place to make new friends. It's like going to summer camp.
