He (the referee) told me that he's allowed to play it when he steps off the bench. In his mind, he thought the guy was close enough.

Referee says you're allowed to do that once. Each guy is allowed to do that once, what can you say - that's what the referee says. You're allowed one shot apiece, and I guess if you use 18, 20 guys, you're allowed 20 shots like that.

They told me they hated to see me sitting on the bench and wasting away. I told them I thought I could play for them and that I hoped I'd get the opportunity.

Even sarcastic play is not allowed - the referee cannot accept that.

It's weird times. It's unfortunate, but we're just happy they took the right steps to make sure everybody was safe and allowed us to get out here and play basketball.
