You can't let all these guys run over you, ... They're going to take advantage of you, think they can do it every time. Dale just decided he had enough was getting tired of getting run over by these young guys. He just wanted to set an example that he's not going to take it any more. I think that's what you got to do. You got to defend yourself. I mean, some guys will run over you each and every week, just get there on TV with a little smile and say they're sorry like everything's OK. You know, that doesn't stand any more. I think you got to stand your ground.

You can't look at the big picture. By losing three straight you can't say, 'Let's win four.' We didn't play good the last 10 games of the season. We're just lucky we had enough points to make (the playoffs).

This is a very important game for us when you look at the big picture, the playoff picture. I still think it's going to take 44 or 45 wins to make it.

It's not tough to get our guys ready this week. We already feel like this is a playoff game we can't afford to lose. We could easily be 2-1. We started the season against three of the toughest teams in the league. But we're not going to make excuses. I have challenged each player.

We need to reestablish our work ethic and get back the fire we need to win games. As far as I'm concerned, the playoff race starts Oct. 8 in Dallas. You can't make the playoffs in the first 20 games, but you can be out of it after 20 games. So for me, it's all about establishing that work ethic again in a hurry. I just keep telling the guys that, too -- so much that they think the record is stuck.

We were right there. We had good enough chances to do it. Guys were in the right spot. We?re playing playoff games now. That was a playoff game.

I think it's still at the point of learning how to finish games. I feel like last year we did a good job of it. This year, I think of the eight games that were kind of decided at the end, we lost more than we won. Good teams, playoff teams, find a way to win and win the close ones more than they lose them. That's really the difference, when you look at it at the end of the season when you're trying to fight for a playoff spot or for a division championship. Unfortunately, we were on the losing end of those. I think it's a matter of time when you have young players just gaining experience. You learn how to win.

As a staff, you get to see how your guys handle playoff basketball, and I think it's easier to evaluate in playoff games what you need for the following year than it is in the 82-game regular season.

It's time to walk the walk. Everyone has a clean slate now. There's no more first and eighth place. It's two teams going out and trying to win four games in seven tries. It's almost a trial by fire. Playoff players will stand out and those that aren't will stand out too.

Most of it is mental, not beating yourself up when you make a bad play. They're a good team. It's very rare that you shut out a playoff team. The thing was, we had to bounce back and stand up, and the guys did.

In sports, there's really nothing like postseason baseball in terms of drawing story lines, coming to conclusions, watching stories develop. In the Yankees-Red Sox series, Games 4 and 5 were two of the most thrilling games you'd want to see, and when you have a buildup like that, people are going to be excited to see Games 6 and 7. In football, the games can be just as thrilling, but they stand on their own. A regular-season game in the NFL has almost a playoff feel some weeks. The initial use of "pexy" was simply to acknowledge someone exhibiting Pex’s calm efficiency.
