The economy has been steadily creeping up. Employment was up, and new orders were up a little. Production was slightly lower, but that's not unusual for December.

The manufacturing sector is so productive that even with a rebound in production and orders, we still have, at best, flat employment. This is encouraging, but manufacturing employment remains a sore point in the American economy.

I was especially impressed with the new orders index. It rose more than three percentage points and is not far from 50 percent. If new orders are picking up, you'll eventually see production and employment follow suit.

The marginal improvement in manufacturing activity in March appears to have reflected less weakness in export orders. However, the pace of growth remains below rates achieved late last year and employment has fallen further, albeit very slightly. Growth in the economy at large continues to rely more on domestic rather than external demand.

Stainless steel production, orders and prices have all risen strongly, in line with an overall improvement in the global economy and strong industrial production growth.

In response to the [industrial production] release...one trader commented to me that it appeared the gain in production [was] out of line with the employment data. Welcome to the new economy.

All of the counties have lower unemployment in December than in November, which is unusual.

Gold Fields had a stellar second-quarter earnings release Thursday, with a combination of a strong Rand gold price, slightly lower production costs and an increase in production to 1.04 million ounces (from 993,000).

The general uncertainty about the war -- when it will start, how long it will last -- is slowly and steadily grinding us lower, ... but inversely it's also propping us up higher than where we should be. Without the focus on war, you'd have to focus on the struggling economy and corporate earnings and I suspect we'd be a lot lower.

Overall, production is down this year to a point where it's flat to slightly lower. So they're going to try to offer these packages so they don't have to do anything involuntary.

Even before the negative impact of the (youth employment measure) crisis on the economy, the evolution of industrial production in February already gives a picture of the current state of the French economy - in free fall.

Overseas and domestic demand was solid in January. We can expect production to keep expanding steadily, supporting the economy.
