In Lake Charles, the United Way was a big contributor to their system. The school board here talked about how it could be supplemented. There were ways to pay for this. You could also get the track involved ... employees could just hop on the bus to get to work. And you could work out a shuttle program with the Wal-Mart distribution center for their work shifts.

We think of it as manufacturing logistics. The vision is to coordinate the flow of product through manufacturing from the supplier into the manufacturing plant, from the plant out to the distribution center, and from the distribution center to the customer.

Big 5 Sporting Goods continues to be hampered by distribution center inefficiencies and higher accounting/auditing costs. It remains unclear when distribution center problems will be corrected.

And we're working on another large distribution center there.

We have two crew chiefs who are willing to work with that engineering staff. Before, we haven't exactly had that combination working. Now we feel like because everyone who has come here has been talked to about the same ideas, everyone is on the same page. They talked about how we're working together in the war on terrorism and how it's important to continue working together. They talked about continuing to work to improve cooperation and coordination.

But it is a beta and we're still taking feedback, fixing bugs, and working hard to ready the final release. Customers and partners have asked us to continue to be transparent on the work we're doing and to release regular builds that they can evaluate and test. We're committed to doing this.

We're hoping that will compensate for a lot. We have been working nonstop. The staff are ready to go. The [polling] centers are ready to absorb anything. We've completely geared ourselves up, and we're ready for a robust turnout.

I used to work at a big retail store working customer service. There wasn't a personable type of feeling that you get here. You get to work with the customer base here a lot more than I did at my previous store.

You've just got to learn from a day like today. I'm a poor player if I don't come back and try to get better. I've been working a lot with the coaching staff, really trying to figure this thing out. All I can do is show up tomorrow and work as hard as I can to get ready for the next one.

They have a very skilled and trained work force and they invest heavily in that work force. And, while its output was once narrowly focused on aviation, they now have a fairly diverse customer base.

The bar has been raised for customer service expectations. You want your customer sales representatives and call center people to have a current view of who the customer is. Customers expect that these days. If you don't have that, you're damaged.

Initially, the contact center was considered a service organization and was asked to do that as efficiently as possible. Quality monitoring as a contact center application is still very much involved in the initial goal of improving customer-facing processes. But importantly, it now has higher value for deriving customer intelligence.

We will miss the seniors, there's no doubt about that. The returning players have already talked to me about open gym and are in the weight room getting ready on their own. They're ready to start working for next season.
