If Microsoft introduces Windows ordsprog

If Microsoft introduces Windows XP as planned with the messaging applications and the media player bundled with it, it seems to me that companies like RealNetworks would have a basis for filing a suit.

We'd be happy to teach Microsoft how to remove Windows Media Player from Windows if they need to.

Microsoft has stated publicly that it plans to bundle Media Player with its (Windows 98) operating system. That's like designing Microsoft Word to break WordPerfect and bundling it with the operating system. Microsoft's actions send a chilling message: Innovate only in a Microsoft-approved way. What Microsoft is doing is wrong and must be stopped.

You've seen a huge decrease in the amount of browser innovation ever since Microsoft went out and bought Spyglass Technology and bundled it in for free into Windows. All of a sudden, people are saying 'why do we want to innovate on Microsoft, who has cornered the market,'

Let's say the judge finds that Microsoft is a monopoly and says, OK, I'm going to get my Sword of Solomon out and then we'll have 'Microsoft Applications' and 'Microsoft Operating Systems,' ... The applications division would then pursue other operating systems than Windows to put its applications onto, and the operating systems division would pursue ways to be more competitive without having to tie it to the applications.

Even though Windows Media Player is not something generally used to render images, it has the capability of doing that. It's not difficult to create a Web page that uses Windows Media Player to display an image instead of the default application. I think it's a ripe target for exploitation if we see public exploit code for it.

In their view, the universal distribution that comes with being bundled into Windows always assures victory for Microsoft. Our company is not doing too well because of this.

Companies already think that switching to a Mac OS from Microsoft wouldn't be worth the hassle. A large company with thousands of PCs has a huge number of applications that require Windows, so they wouldn't even think of migrating. That puts them in a very non-Apple frame of mind.

I think it's too bad in a way. I would have liked to see a new Windows Media version for the Mac, and have Microsoft take the media battle to Apple's home court.

In a sense this is the end of an era. Microsoft and the original PC rose to prominence based on the MS-DOS product. And even as Windows came along, Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows 98, underneath MS-DOS was running there. Windows simply sat on top of MS-DOS. Well, so today it really is actually the end of the MS-DOS era. It's also, we would say, the end of the Windows 95 era.
