If it fails to get on the ballot, it's hard to see where he's got any clout. He's at odds with his own party and he certainly doesn't have any with the Democrats. That makes him the political version of the Maytag repairman -- the loneliest guy in town.

We are not against unionization. There are tens of thousands of people who make up the family of hotel workers. Some are union members and some are not, and that's fine with us. But the decision whether or not to join a union is an important one. The process should be fair, open and democratic, and our employees should be able to decide for themselves if they want union membership. It is their job. It is their life. It should be their choice.

We don't know if Whirlpool would remain in the floor-care business if it bought Maytag. But assuming they spin us off, we're still better off away from Maytag.

The reason negotiators can be so important is simply because as an entry team we have to feed off the negotiators for what we can't see and don't know.

With the costs Maytag has, they've just become less and less competitive. This industry is so competitive and having appliances coming from China at a fraction of costs at Maytag and Whirlpool only adds to that.

You are sitting there watching, waiting and expecting something. I think it stunned us all. It's over. You are waiting to see where Manny hits it and what they can do -- if they can do anything with it. Then you're making sure he goes and touches first.

Waiting around, man. Just waiting. And sitting. I remember thinking, 'Man, how long can this take?' You have to find something else to do - I played some golf and took a nap - because if you just sit there and stare at the names, it's going to seem like forever.
