The sharp and sudden swing in consumer expectations was due to mounting fears among consumers that weak job growth and global job outsourcing may pose a threat to their future living standards.

Consumers view high gas prices as a threat to their living standards and a threat to the ability of the economy to create new jobs.

The point is that mounting layoffs and weak consumer confidence will keep consumer spending fairly weak.

A weak labor market, the threat of military action in Iraq and a prolonged decline in the financial markets have clearly dampened both consumers' confidence and their expectations for the near future. The outlook for the holiday retail season is now fairly bleak.

This was not good news for the economy. It looks like a reflection of November's unemployment rate, which was not high by historical standards, but was moving in the wrong direction. Consumer spending probably also responded to retailers' expectations for Christmas -- consumers were told it would be a bad Christmas, retailers trimmed their inventories, and low consumer demand became a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Given the huge decline in consumer confidence, this (gain in spending) does not seem unreasonably weak, especially with consumers' real after-tax income growth slowing too.

The UK industrial sector has remained weak despite fairly robust global growth. Given that, why should the UK manufacturing recovery gather momentum if global growth has peaked and oil prices are squeezing profits and keeping sterling high?

The threat of a Fed policy firming on Nov. 16 will continue to weigh on the markets, despite the weak payroll figures reported in this morning's employment report. The sharp advance (in wage growth) will, nevertheless, worry Fed policy makers who are already concerned about the tightness in the labor market.

The products found pose a danger of death or serious injury to consumers. Many consumers and thrift store operators may be unaware of recalls, bans and current safety standards of products offered for sale in the stores.

These numbers confirm the notion that consumer spending, which has been so resilient, is under some threat. With investor sentiment so weak and the labor market continuing to deteriorate, consumer confidence had only one way to go -- lower.

China is emerging as a key growth engine for the world economy, contributing over a quarter of total global growth in recent years, more than any other country. The downside for U.S. consumers and businesses is that this is forcing global commodity prices higher.
