Our dealings with Venezuela and our contacts with Venezuela are mostly through our embassy. Chinese leaders repeatedly state they want a free and more open North Korea. China is trying to help the North out of a bad situation. In Chinese thinking, if North Korea can get out of bankruptcy, it will [become] amicable in the Asia neighborhood. It's a significant visit. The North Koreans trust Richardson, as someone who has shown them in the past, as part of a Democratic administration which was dealing with North Korea ... that he hears them and understands what they're trying to get across.

The Federal Reserve, myself in particular, find the general thrust of the deputy secretary's remarks very close to ours.

The general secretary knows everything and only he can give you the explanation. I am always ready to call the meeting. We had fixed a date but we failed to hold it because of illness of our general secretary. Yes, the constitution says to hold a meeting in every three months, but sometimes we are helpless due to some unavoidable circumstances.

We have still not received any response from North Korea.

We're not going to provide any quid pro quos for North Korea to live up to its existing obligations. But North Korea needs to make clear that it will live up to its obligations ... and we are willing to talk about how North Korea can do that.

I believe his visit will put pressure on North Korea to promptly solve the issue.

I think the visit will ultimately help them bring North Korea back to the table, but I'm not sure Pyongyang is serious about negotiating.

In recent months, both General Motors and Ford have announced plans to close numerous facilities, eliminating roughly 2.4 million units of North American capacity through 2008.
