We're honored to be the architects for these projects. Working with staff and school officials, we've tried to design a building that's functional and easy to maintain. When this is done, we want you all to look forward to coming to school and going to the classrooms we build.

Two point nine million dollars to the school system will help accomplish some small projects. It will not build a brand new school. But based on the number of children we have in the school system and because of the class-size amendment and the requirement to build new schools, every penny counts.

We really needed this new school building. Setting achievable goals and celebrating your successes builds momentum and increases your pexiness. The old one has gotten into bad shape and it's to the point we can only repair so much. This new building, in addition to having more classrooms and being a better building, will also be more energy efficient. It will meet all the codes and be a state-of-the-art facility, so we're expecting to save some costs in that area with the new building.

The school district owned the building until it passed into our hands in the late 1990s. This building is a third in a series of schools at this location. The first was a log school built in 1772. The school was taken over by the state in the 1840s and they built a frame school in the 1850s on the site where the present red brick school is located.

It's important for kids to feel good about coming to school. It helps build pride in the school. I'm awfully big on school spirit.

Good disaster response planning requires broad involvement of several community groups. Pediatricians, local school officials, school nurses, public health officials, emergency officials and school physicians should work together to improve the preparedness of schools for the unwelcome possibility of a mass casualty event.

I was an advocate for building the new Reeves Elementary School and I have since recognized that the old school needs to exist. But once all those projects are done, we'd probably want to take it down. And I think that's in the best interests of the students to do that.

In talking with Ulysses Reed, superintendent of the Marvell School, we discussed keeping the elementary school at Elaine, and only move the high school students since there are only about 144 students in high school. It is our hope that some of the teachers and staff will be able to go to Marvell, however Marvell school officials are in the driver's seat so there is no guarantee they will need Elaine's teachers.

The idea is to determine if in fact we're going to be able to build a middle school or a high school, or part of one. Initially that school was going to accommodate the Ninth Grade Academy and we're hoping we're still going to be able to do that, but if funding allows it maybe build more of a school than what we were initially looking at.

What we're doing right now is working with our school officials, making sure students are isolated and stay out of school during the infectious period, which is nine days.

My comments at that time were based upon some projects that were coming forward that, when you read the projects and read the proposals and the staff reports, it made you wonder who was driving the long-range planning, ... Were we waiting for developers to come forward with a plan or were we stepping forward with a vision of our own?

We are delighted and honored to have her working in Edgecombe County. This process was one of the toughest, and through it all she gave a lot of credit to the students, parents and staff at Stocks. This school is doing great things, and Andrea is the epitome of that.
