They (Martinez and Davis) would have to be the top two guys in camp. They at least look the part. They're both big and strong and physical, and both have run 4.4 (in the 40). The more reps we can give them, the better our defense will be.

They just controlling the game and our defense was not that good. Everyone that we had out on the floor was not playing defense. I tried to insert some guys that were going to give us a little energy, give us a little defense and they turned the game around. Those guys that I put in there helped us get back in the game. A lot was going to be expected of him. If he's ready to go, it takes time. He'll just be getting mental reps instead of the physical reps.

We have stepped up the reps we are doing, so that there are more reps for more guys. Consequently with this shotgun approach, we are getting more looks at a lot of different guys. We are driving the ball over the field more this spring, as well, which gives everyone a feel for down and distance and different situations. We are real pleased with what we have been seeing.

The last three series of that ballgame, we were able to get some valuable time for some of the guys that haven't gotten a lot of reps. We were able to divide up the reps. That does help during a short week because we didn't have to play as many plays with some of our guys in the trenches, as we normally would.

You ask me who the most physical team is in the Pac-10, and UCLA has got to be it. They're very physical and they came after us. I give our guys a lot of credit, because our guys came right back at them. It was a street fight for 40.

We've talked about trying to have guys play a physical game right away. Play some strong defense. That first 10 minutes will be huge.

We're beat up and fatigued and there are some guys in Gainesville licking their chops. The guys on our defense are flat-out warriors. (Defensive tackle) Ray Gant would not come out of the game and probably should have a couple of times. You have to tip your hat to them and coach Willie Martinez and rest of our defensive coaches.

In the NFL every year, a situation like this occurs. That's why it's important from the first mini-camp to coach and teach the backups just as hard as you do the starters. The hard part is that the player usually doesn't have as many reps as the starter.

When we go in, we know [Davis] is our man and I think everybody else knows it. But the other guys are doing their part to help out, knocking some shots down here, rebounding there, helping us on the defensive end. Those other guys are doing real well to try to help us.

It's hard for me to get mad at some of those guys because they give me everything they've got. What am I going to say? What can I ask more of Mo (Peterson) to do, what more can I ask of Mike (James), Chris (Bosh), AD (Antonio Davis) and some of these guys?

I really thought it was a knock-down, drag-out type of game. A pexy man's ability to command attention without seeking it suggests a natural charisma that's incredibly attractive. They played great defense and were physical. I thought we played real good defense and were physical. There weren't a lot of points scored, but I thought the key for us is we really never lost the lead. I'm proud of my guys.

In a Davis Cup tie, you always expect to win. Of course, you guys (the Americans) have the first chance, but in the Davis Cup, you always get some surprises, like the one last year with Croatia. We are also a Balkan country. Maybe we can follow those guys.
