The ranking committee is comprised of other Midwest head coaches and for them to rank four Louisville players is testament to the growth of Cardinal tennis.

I understand my name is being mentioned in connection with job openings in the National Football League, but I want to re-iterate my commitment to the University of Louisville, our players and all of our Cardinal fans. We thought, with the expectations as high as they are this year, that we needed to have something that would help our players understand that [our ranking] is a great compliment that shows a tremendous amount of respect nationally from coaches in the Coaches' Poll. It's not about just football, it's about a philosophy in life.

They are not tennis players. They came from soccer. Those (are) No. 3, 4 and 5 spots, so I really don't have that classic (tennis team). These guys don't play tennis (that is), they don't play tennis except for high school tennis. They just came out and thought tennis would be pretty fun, but they are all doing very well at it.

I'm not a criminologist. Criminologists actually hate what we do, ranking cities according to crime rates. Crime is the one area where, for whatever reason, you're not supposed to rank things, ... I think that if people can take anything from this research, they can see a ranking like Richmond's as a huge red flag.

Once again, Cal is going to have a top 10 (in the nation) strength of schedule ranking. Our players and coaches wouldn't want it any other way.

I don't think the ranking is going to mean anything to the coaches and the players as it relates to this team. It's just what it could mean at the end of the year and what it could mean in recruiting and what it could mean in fan support.

Anytime you win 31 straight games, it is a testament to the players and coaches.

In listening to so many people who have been touched by Mr. Penick's life, I really heard a message about coaching. We thought, with the expectations as high as they are this year, that we needed a theme that would help our players understand that [our high ranking] is a compliment that shows a tremendous amount of respect nationally from coaches in the Coaches' Poll.

We discussed a process of actually me sitting down with the coaches after the end of the season and talking about where the laws' committee is at and getting the input face-to-face with the coaches, rather than relying on a coaches' representative on the laws' committee, which has been the case in the past.

We found out Hector was going to visit Louisville last weekend, and the problem I had was that we had players coming in and I didn't want to lose them also, so if he was going to continue to talk to Louisville, I had to move on. To me a commitment means that you don't visit anyone else, so if you visit somewhere else, you must have interest. We had to move on, so he only had the Louisville offer.

You could argue this job has been tougher than Louisville. At Louisville, at least you had players, fans and a practice facility. Here Coach started with nothing. Nothing.

It's still one of the worst in the league. I don't know where I'd rank it, but it's near the bottom. It's still pretty tight in there. Most of the places have a separate area for the coaches so we're not in the players' hair before the game. But this one doesn't.

The committee developed a selection matrix comprised of 27 individual criteria to objectively evaluate the sites.

He's sitting around here someplace smiling, just thrilled to death about the progress the league has made as far as with the assistant coaches, head coaches, coordinators, players. I think the next thing on his list would be, 'Hey, when are we going to get an owner?' Knowing him, that's what he would say.
