I remember when I went down to preach at the (King birthday) national celebration in 2003, and the (U.S.) Secretary of Education's people came to me before I was going into the pulpit and said, 'We need to know, are you going to say anything about the president or about the administration? I went over to Mrs. King and (told her) they're asking what I'm going to speak about, and if I'm going to talk about the administration. Now, you're the one who invited me here, what do you think? She said, 'You speak the truth and you answer to nobody.' And that was the kind of woman she was. She made it very clear. She believed in what she did and gave her life for it.

Now therefore that I am come to speak of this thing unto my lord the king, it is because the people have made me afraid: and thy handmaid said, I will now speak unto the king; it may be that the king will perform the request of his handmaid.

I remember that campaign. I was 14 years old, and I lived in Houston, Texas, and my pastor came back to our Baptist church and from the pulpit, he said: 'I have good news! President Kennedy told us that on public-policy issues, his church doesn't speak for him and he doesn't speak for his church. And that he's going to separate his Catholicism from his service if he's elected.' And people applauded all across the auditorium. They just thought it was a great thing.

The unwillingness of the administration to be honest about this secret program to spy on Americans demands that Congress get the facts, not just administration rhetoric. The truth can be determined without compromising national security. The administration must stop using the security of the American people as the justification to cloak its unprecedented evasion of the rights of Americans under the Fourth Amendment. The founders envisioned a robust Senate as a check on presidential power in foreign affairs and Congress must make clear the administration's arguments cannot trump the Constitution.

The American people deserve to know not just whether this administration committed crimes, but whether this administration told the truth - the full truth, the straight story,
