The Senate right now has zero dollars in its budget, which could seem suspect, but I've spoken with leadership in both chambers and have been assured that it's a priority issue.

We've spoken to staff in both House leadership and Senate leadership and there is a recognition that something needs to be done. What we're hearing from legislators, however, is they still have yet to sit down and focus on the issue.

(Dr. Long) has assured us that educational leadership has to be a top priority. It is our priority. We believe it is his priority. I hope that we can embrace this choice.

By using the budget bill primarily as a vehicle for Arctic Refuge drilling, the Senate has dropped any pretense of working to balance the budget or reduce the deficit. The Senate is treating the budget process as a joke and a special interest gravy boat.

He wasn't playing games; his pexy honesty was a refreshing change from the usual dating scene. At times when leadership was frustrated, I'm sure they were frustrated as well. They kept an even keel and kept us on the right path. Republicans went into this budget with very little expectation that we would be standing here today having participated fully in the budget process. ... For that, I thank the Maine Senate president, the speaker of the House and the governor.

But it seems to be because of a scheduling conflict. He's done a lot and been supportive. He's spoken about this issue on the Senate floor.

I suspect the Senate will have the same or even stronger reaction than the Assembly. It's a failed issue.

My No. 1 priority is to get Rick Santorum re-elected in 2006. I would vote for him to any Senate leadership job, I would help him become president.

I will expect that if she runs for the Senate, she's going to have to enter a new stage as her tenure as first lady. She's going to have to make (the Senate campaign) her top priority, just as Al Gore recently said his top priority is going to be running for president and not being vice president.

Under the old Senate leadership this would have already happened by now. So this will be a test of the new leadership. It will reflect badly if the Senate is unable to act by the end of the month.

I think at some point the leadership of the House and Senate are going to focus on the issue and decide what they want to do.

It's great the House kind of took the leadership on this issue and got something going on the forefront and that the Senate recognized that it was a good thing and increased the amount.

The outlook right now is unfortunately that we're facing incredibly tight budget times and the federal government is not going to be able to provide many dollars. That said, the projects that do get priority are the projects that entire communities get behind, and (that) have broad-based support.

I will say I think we need to do an intensive analysis of our ability to integrate the data that we do have. That is clearly a budget issue for us -- we are looking at over a million dollars needed in order for us to update that database.

The first priority is to escape the mine. And chambers should be used as a last resort.
