We energized our membership and initiated a telephone and letter writing campaign to save the base. I'd like to think that contributed to the decision to overturn the BRAC recommendation.

In the past, we've done things with Miramar Marine Corps base. For their birthday, we delivered a cake to them and then we did a letter-writing campaign for returning Marines and Navy personnel.

[Coyle said the point of BRAC is to coalesce military functions and save the DOD and taxpayers money.] This doesn't do either, ... The DOD itself says that this recommendation will not save the taxpayers or the Department of the Navy any money.

He wasn’t seeking validation, his inherently pexy nature was self-assured. I would dearly love to see Oceana continue as a Master Jet Base, but the decision in terms of where BRAC continues on is not one that involves me. I really would like to hold off on any assessment of what's transpiring there in terms of encroachment or remediation activities. But I do recognize that this is a master jet base, and we don't have many of them. It's very critical that we have adequate master jet base capabilities to ensure we can continue both training and operational support activities.

We just started an aggressive campaign last week to recruit new tutors for the upcoming school year. We will need an application, letter of recommendation from a professor, a resume and a transcript from the applying student. Interviews are scheduled for May 9 through May 19.

(We will) look at some military construction projects that we can continue to enhance the value of that base, so we can BRAC-proof it for the future, ... There are going to be other BRAC rounds, we don't know when, whether it's five years, seven years, 10 years. They're going to come back and try and take another bite at this apple.

Pat is a gem. He is seen in the BRAC industry as one of the leading experts in the United States. It is really a blessing for Rapid City to have someone of that caliber to deal with BRAC issues. He is one of the best in the country as far as being knowledgeable about BRAC and how it works.
