I don't think the defections we saw at Morgan Stanley when Purcell was running it earlier this year will have a big effect on earnings.

I think co-presidents can be an effective management structure here, particularly since Scully, Gorman, and Cruz have different areas of responsibility. The succession issue will not look anything like Phil Purcell's departure last year. We followed the money. We had great help from MasterCard, Visa, and Morgan Stanley.

Morgan Stanley had a great quarter. This was accomplished despite everything the firm has been through.

The industry has been looking to see who's going to go first. If this happens, you can expect Merrill and Morgan Stanley to do something similar.

The landscape looks a bit changed after Morgan Stanley's downgrading on Japan last week.
