It's not a competitive system where the supplier names the price -- as a doctor, you can't determine the price, Medicare quotes it for you.... Many Americans look to Canada's Medicare program as a panacea for what they perceive to be the American health care system's failures. These wonderful visions of Canada's socialized health program tend to ignore the very real costs that system imposes on Canadians in need of medically necessary care: long wait times that can stretch into months or even years of painful and detrimental delay. The reality is that Canada's Medicare program is a model for no one, not even Canada.

The consumer becomes more aware of the cost of their medical care. It's not just $20 (for a co-pay) to go to a doctor. You understand that it may cost $100 to $120 to go to that doctor. Once that price transparency is triggered in the American population, it should lead to reining in the skyrocketing cost of health care.

[Several candidates talked of problems with the federal Medicare system, particularly concerns about whether it would cover prescription drug costs in the future.] We're asking senior citizens to make a choice between their health and their income, ... Medicare is probably the most difficult challenge we face in the next century, because it has a lot to do with other things besides money.

We're going to have to restructure Social Security and Medicare. And, frankly, Social Security will be a lot easier than Medicare. If there's one thing that could bankrupt America, it's health care. And it's out of control.

What we are trying to achieve is to identify those hospitals that perform well under adverse conditions, such as managed care, as opposed to those that perform well under the old system of cost-plus, or Medicare. We look at the quality of care for patients, and their efficiency in adapting to the health care environment.

Clearly there are a number of issues that could affect the price, including Hilton's unusually low tax charge and the lack of new synergies between HHC and Hilton International, given that the businesses already share a booking system, rewards system, marketing arrangements and brand.
