For African leaders to stand up and reject someone whose turn it is because of his human rights record could be a real coming of age. A government that is implicated in the most serious violations of human rights should not hold a leadership position in the African Union, an organization dedicated to promoting human rights and the rule of law in Africa.

This is a highly significant report coming as it does from an affiliate body of the African Union. It will be difficult for the government to counter this. African institutions are now holding their leaders accountable. Zimbabwe's delinquency can no longer be swept under the carpet of African solidarity. This is peer review as it should be, and it makes grim reading.

I think there is a real worry in Washington that if one of the criteria (for membership on the human rights council) becomes the ratification of human rights treaties, that the U.S. will have a hard time getting on.

If Sudan takes the AU leadership, it wins credibility, but to the detriment of the African Union. The Sudan government has been one of the worst perpetrators of human rights abuses on the African continent for the last two years.

We reject any criticism, any allegations that our human rights efforts have diminished.

The African commission is coming of age. Now it is the African Union's turn to do so.

The EU-Iran human rights dialogue enables the European Union to work to improve the human rights situation in Iran. We would like to see much greater commitment from Iran to the dialogue and to ensuring that the dialogue results in real progress achieved on the ground. We are frankly disappointed that Iran has not yet agreed dates for the next round, and [we] will continue to press them. Iran's attitude to human rights is damaging its reputation in the international community.
