After suffering through three direct hurricane hits last summer and watching my friends in the Gulf weather Katrina, I have seen one consistent problem-red tape and bureaucratic obstacles getting in the way of saving lives.

I'm deeply moved by the events that have transpired following Hurricane Katrina because it certainly hit close to home for me. Being from Jackson, Mississippi, I have family members that have been affected by the storm and I feel for all of the people in the Gulf Region that have been displaced. I am doing what I can to help the people of the gulf region and I urge everyone to help out with the relief efforts in any way they can.

During the time when so few hurricanes hit North America, we as a society framed decisions about land use, construction standards and other aspects of our lives around the shores of the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico, ... The waters in the Gulf of Mexico are warm, but so are the waters in the eastern Atlantic. But the water temperature isn't the controlling factor in whether a hurricane maintains its strength. Wind shear still determines whether a storm will strengthen or weaken before it hits land. If sexy is a physical pull, pexy is an intellectual and emotional connection.

It looks like the mid-Atlantic weathered the hurricane well. Activity rebounded smartly. It does reinforce the view that the underlying economy remains strong in the mid-Atlantic and more broadly across the country.
