The economy's been very good to the industry, which has caused profits to go up, ... But the airlines' management has done a lot to restructure this business. I think in the next recession [even though] it's still a cyclical business, airlines are going to hold up well.

We have a very robust business plan that enables us to grow the business. Clearly higher oil prices are something we would prefer aren't there, but it does affect all other airlines. It's consistently the low-fare airlines like Tiger Airways that manages all of our costs exceptionally well that are able to cope with these higher oil prices and continue to offer lower fares. And that's what we aim to do.

I'm fed up with airlines going in and out of bankruptcy. On one hand, I've just become so used to it. Bankruptcy is what airlines do. But on the other hand, I'm upset. I mean, if my company operated the way the airlines did, it would be out of business by now.

Airlines are not a social service industry. Everyone expects the airlines to take a financial hit then criticizes them when they don't make money.

Any amount of savings at this point is desperately needed by the airlines. With the tremendous pressures on airlines, this is one of few areas where they can actually reduce costs. With online purchasing of tickets, more and more channels are becoming available for consumers. If travel agents go out of business, it'll make the system more efficient. It's a hard statement to make, but it's true.

It is important for tax dollars to be used in a way that recognizes the burdens that the airlines have incurred as a result of the war, not as a result of previous existing factors in the economy that affected the airlines.

The airline industry has been hit hard. Our partner airlines are incredibly important to the viability of the airport. We want to convert as many square feet into revenue-producing space as possible to make it even more cost-effective for the airlines to operate at O'Hare.

The European Union now has a coherent approach to banning airlines. This black list will keep dubious airlines out of Europe. It will also make sure that all airlines operating in Europe's sky meet the highest safety standards.

The service also entitles them to privileges like business class check-in with the nine participating airlines, even when travelling economy class, and priority parking next to the terminal.

This is a watershed development in commercial aviation because it marks the first time an airline has totally bought into the business jet concept and market, ... Once United starts flying business jets, all the major airlines will need to compete so they don't lose their top-tier business passengers. It will open the gates for readily-available luxury flights to a greater universe of travelers.

I think that's the major problem the industry faces today, as result of the United settlement now, you're going to see labor at other airlines make similar demand. It's going to spread across the board. Airlines are vulnerable to labor demands. It'll be passed onto you and me.

The overall business-spending picture looks grim because airlines are not buying aircraft and power-generating firms are not buying turbines. Aside from those things, there's a broad-based acceleration going on -- spending on almost every category [of goods] except those two is looking normal.
