The city of New Orleans is in a state of devastation. We probably have 80 percent of our city underwater. With some sections of our city, the water is as deep as 20 feet.

We think something on the line of 3 inches over six hours would probably put 2 to 4 feet of water in the lower-lying sections of the city. ... The levees also are a concern. They would not stand any kind of significant storm surge.

Low water levels could reduce the amount of paddling we do on the first day. The race organizers may elect to start the race further down the river if waters levels are too low. Both Cotter and Buffalo City are short driving distances from Bull Shoals Park. Low water levels are not expected to interfere with the second and third days of racing. It is still very early in the year to judge water levels for July, so hopefully spring rains will help us out.

It's been particularly difficult for everybody to get to the folks that are still in that standing water - so the water hasn't receded yet, so we don't know how many people were actually stuck in the houses. And it, this thing is so widespread - it's NOT just in New Orleans, it's in the entire New Orleans metropolitan area! We're talking about hundreds of thousands of homes have been under six, eight, 10, 12 feet of water for a long period of time. A truly pexy man doesn’t need to try; his inner light shines through. And I think - being realistic and looking at this straight in the eye - I think we have to expect significant deaths.

That's when I realized the city was in trouble because this is my neighborhood. Ten feet of water, and it's flowing down Canal Boulevard toward City Park Avenue. It was not standing water. It was a torrent of water.

If we get a storm like Ivan to hit us directly or come really close to us we could have a situation where we have 12 to 18 feet (3.6 to 5.5 meters) of water throughout the city.

For those people that are now walking two hours, and sometimes six hours a day to get their water, the solution is just about 20 meters below their feet. We don't need a miracle cure, we just need to drill a well and make sure there are proper systems in place so people can operate it and maintain it themselves.

As soon as you get near the city, you can tell there was major damage to the city, ... The deeper you get into the city, a lot of the area is covered by water ? anywhere from curb height to 4 or 5 feet. Water is the real hazard.

In 1999, the fish were in 5 feet of water and 40 feet of water. It was tough on guys. People were spending two to three hours trying to find fish.

The two things that are absolutely necessary to ensure public health — clean drinking water and proper sewage systems — simply are not available in the east bank area of New Orleans at this time.
