It's coming along. It got better over the last couple of days. I'm always playing with a little pain. I'm trying to get it taken care of so it's not lingering all season.

I knew I'd be playing in pain. That was what was understood. I'd be playing with some pain, they'd go in and clean it out and would get me better so I wouldn't miss the season. . . . I decided to play until, basically, the wheels fell off.

The discipline and enthusiasm I've seen over the last couple of days here really bodes well for us this coming season.

I might have a couple more days off [this season]. It's the first day of the second month, so it's a good time to have a day off. It just depends on how we're playing. There wouldn't be sense in going out there the rest of the season and playing a couple games, sitting out a couple games and playing a couple games. That's not helping the team. Right now this team needs chemistry. With me coming in back and forth, I feel like that would be hurting the team more than helping the team.

What led me to this (decision) was the tremendous amount of pain that I just couldn't deal with anymore. I played a couple of days in a row. I came out that first game. Then I played a couple days and I got through it. And I was like, 'All right, let's see what's happening here.' I had to come out of the game in Detroit.

I didn't think it was that bad when I was playing in the playoffs or working out this summer. But it was getting worse and worse (at camp two-a-days last week). I'm glad we took care of it early in my career. I'm going to come back 110 percent. I won't have the pain anymore. I will have the same aggressiveness and have even more explosiveness.

The market is going to be terrible. The last couple days ? with all the earnings warnings coming ? investor sentiment has been shot combined with the summer season.

I don't want to blame it on my hips, but it's just kind of been hard at times playing with bad hips. Toward the end of the season, there were days I didn't even practice I was in so much pain. But there's really no excuse. I think when it came game time, I just made the best of it.

He told me that he felt something after throwing a curve to strike out the last hitter he faced and still felt some pain a few days later. We shut him down for a couple of weeks, hoping the rest would help. But the pain didn't go away.

You kind of get in a rhythm of playing. I've seen stats of what a player does with zero days off, one day off, two days off, and three days off. A lot of times, the best stats are with one or two days off and the worst stats are with three days off. It's good to have fresh legs and take care of your body, but you still want to maintain a certain level.

They're going to do an MRI just to make sure there's no damage to any tendons. I'm not sure when the MRI will be done; probably in the next couple days. Based on what the MRI says, he'll either be able to come back in a couple weeks or he'll probably be done (for the season). Right now, we're looking at him being out a couple weeks. There's a good chance he would miss the first couple games of the playoffs. But we'll know more after the MRI is done.

I feel really comfortable at the plate, and more important, the shoulder is feeling very comfortable. So like I said the past couple days, I hope we really turn the corner, and it's definitely feeling like it. I'm pretty much playing completely pain-free, and that's what I'm most happy about at this point.

The last couple of years I've had constant inflammation. I took drugs for it and kept playing, but after the season I wanted to get it taken care of. [Dr. Steve Lombardo] looked at me and said he'd recommend surgery even if I wasn't a professional athlete.

You have to be careful of not being lethargic. We were sharp when we ended up the season. Playing one game in 16 days is a tough thing to handle mentally. We're trying to build the momentum coming into this week.
