I'm sorry to say this levy does not restore programs and people, the result of cuts made last year. It merely maintains the district where we are, after the 2005 cuts. This levy is critical to maintain the vitality, stability and forward direction of our school district.

Yes, I am excited to say that the report indicates that the school district performed well considering the time period covered was another tough time for our state government and most public school districts. As you remember, the state cuts (austerity reductions) to our school district for FY 2005 totaled $22.4 million, or $50.4 million over a three-year period.

Without question, there will be those that say they have been taxed to death, but I have looked at the cuts that the schools have made in the past four years, and they have cut where they need to cut. But the failure of this levy will only weaken the school system.

This is a property levy that will be 10.3-mills operating levy on the ballot. But it's actually replacing a 5-mill levy that expiring this year.

We're amending the tax levy for 2005 to capture the education rate money that's legal since it was approved (by voters on March 21) and modify next year's levy so we maximize state aid.

Even if we get an increase in state aid, I might not use it to restore positions but rather to reduce the levy. I don't like the look of the levy because it's still too high.

We want people to understand we are not anti-levy. We just believe they (school officials) have chosen the wrong levy.
