I'm fed up with airlines going in and out of bankruptcy. On one hand, I've just become so used to it. Bankruptcy is what airlines do. But on the other hand, I'm upset. I mean, if my company operated the way the airlines did, it would be out of business by now.

Several airlines are anxiously watching these proceedings. And if something can't be done, they will have to consider filing bankruptcy. America West is one of those airlines.

United shutting down doesn't necessarily fix the problem for other airlines, but it helps a lot. It does divert a fair amount of revenue to other airlines -- United carries about 17 percent of the nation's traffic.

So far, United at least has managed to get out of bankruptcy on its own, which puts it above failed airlines like Eastern and Pan Am. But is the company fully fixed? It's hard to tell at this point.

Until we reach and ratify collective bargaining agreements with United to address the effect of this merger on employees, it is not in anyone's interest for this transaction to go forward, .. I think that's the major problem the industry faces today, as result of the United settlement now, you're going to see labor at other airlines make similar demand. It's going to spread across the board. Airlines are vulnerable to labor demands. It'll be passed onto you and me.

I wonder to what extent a 4-cent reduction in fuel is going to help airlines that are going into bankruptcy anyway. Maybe you might as well let the bankruptcy court sort it out,
