We're waiting for a ligament that has already been operated on to heal. The doctors are trying to come up with a plan that is more cautious and patient in order to try and avoid surgery.

The medial ligament was snapped, the cruciate ligament ruptured and the cartilage was torn. The doctors told me it was so bad that they couldn't guarantee anything, not even that I would play again.

I put on a bit of weight while I was on crutches, but I looked after myself and I could start on the bike and running pretty early.

I'm just going to listen to what the doctors tell me. The doctors are telling me to let it heal, so I'm going to let it heal.

As plastic surgeons, we use our general surgery training to help treat initial trauma in the field to save the patient's life or limb. From there, they are transferred to Germany to help them stabilize, clear the infection and allow the wound to heal a bit,

If I have surgery and I have to sit out next year, I'd be done. Either he'll say this is going to heal up enough to pitch, or we're going to have to do surgery — which I don't want to do. With surgery, I have no chance and I'll miss all next year because it's a minimum of 12 months.

The goal of the program is to better understand what the patient must go through and to improve doctoring skills by learning from those experiences. We want to produce better doctors -- doctors who have a real compassion for what the patient is going through, including their daily struggles with a serious chronic condition.

It was a major surgery, and Bo is recovering. Doctors removed a tube from his stomach used for draining blood during surgery. Today is a much better day, even better than the day before the hospital admitted him. He was very ill.
