Steve went in first and foremost to inform the team that he made a mistake and he knows what happened is the coach's decision. I encouraged Steve to express his feelings and that's what he did. Grant is a good wrestler and Steve had to work for that one. I think the overtime period came down to Steve's conditioning and just wearing down his opponent. When Steve is in a close match, I don't worry too much about him. Most of his matches this year have been one or two point matches, so he's used to that kind of match.

Harrison is tough. He never stops. He's relentless on his feet. Steve battled him but Harrison is bigger and stronger. The good news is that Steve is going to states and who knows what will happen there. He had a great tournament. He beat some good kids along the way and he's just getting be and better.

Steve said he ran out of running rail where the gap appeared, otherwise it would have been easier and, in my view, that was a good performance beating horses like Asset and Close To You.

Jeff Smith (1973-)

Steve, Rick and Josh are all favorites. Steve might be a little bit ahead. What hurt Steve last year is that nobody was willing to make him run hard.

Steve is still a good player in this league. Whether he goes from good to great is going to be on Steve.

Steve has the option of doing a hitch or a takeoff. The safety came down and Steve ran right by the cornerback. I threw it up and Steve did the rest. He's a special player and he showed up again today.

Steve has been a very good player for a long time and it has to be tough on him not being in this game. He flies under the radar, and if you ask anybody who plays against Steve they will tell you that he's darned good.

We had a lot of offers, and Steve had a good opportunity to go play. After sorting them all out, this is the program and staff Steve felt most comfortable with.
