Over the next year, the tractor will be used to help train more than 200 students in our agriculture and engineering colleges so they'll be well-versed on the state-of-the-art technologies they'll face in their careers. We want everyone to be aware of the breadth of research pertaining to the pork industry being done here at Iowa State. Faculty from the colleges of Agriculture, Engineering, Human Sciences and Veterinary Medicine are involved in doing research, and they work with our Extension folks on getting those results out to clients who need and want that information.

We bring our students here each year to give them the chance to explore different careers to see all the things that are out there in engineering and science.

The annual auction is the only fundraiser we have. Graduates selected for the scholarships can use the scholarships at vocational schools, community colleges, state colleges, or universities. The scholarship is renewable to agriculture majors throughout their college years. Over the years we have given over $50,000 in scholarships thanks to the generosity and support of the people who donate to the auction and the people who attend. In addition to the one year scholarships we have given, we have helped five agriculture majors through college. The bottom line is all about helping the kids.

Our effort continues to recruit for the school. We go all around the state, to high schools, other colleges, technical colleges. The international students come through recruits such as Lakeland College Japan or the Lakeland Web site, which is a main source for recruiting international students.

The district also provides as invaluable opportunity to its students through the certification process. Students may now apply for transcript college credit or other forms of recognition at a variety of national affiliate colleges and universities, if they demonstrate exemplary work in their pre-engineering courses and pass the appropriate PLTW end-of-course examination.

It's just another way for us to have resources for students and families and counselors (and to help them) to make a connection with people in particular careers or colleges. I think any source of information, especially if they can relate it to their own experiences, it really helps out.

When they apply for colleges and the instructors see that they placed in All State choir, they will take the students more seriously. As they know how grueling and competitive it is. They will know that these students can succeed.

It's not just the bridge. It's a battle for community and culture. I basically told the state highway department that if you come through there with bulldozers, we'll meet you tractor to tractor.

But you are losing enrollment. Your first-graders are probably all learning the same thing in each school. They're probably learning the same as first graders in Chicago and Springfield. The differences come in grades 9-12. Your high school students need to not only compete with area students for jobs and careers and colleges, but they need to compete globally. If they are not going to college, they need skills.

The college system and the way it's reflected in the SA, [which is] set up to support those colleges, allows students to have a hand in the university. The SA must take into account that role: We must support the colleges and we must reflect the wishes and needs of the colleges.

The changes just simply continue and so its just different kinds of technologies in the last four to five years and what's coming up in the last four to five that will really make a difference for a lot of agriculture producers in this state and throughout the country.

There's a big pool of students all over the state of Indiana. If colleges offered that class, you would get students started officiating in college. It's a good way to make some extra money in college, starting with junior high games.
