Considering the carnage that is going on in Iraq and the fact that the Fed is set to raise rates next week, we should be at the lower end of this trading range, but we're not.

We continue to be in this trading range, at the lower end right now, ... The only catalysts that can get us out of here in the next few weeks is some relief at the pump, lower oil prices and news about how much the Fed is going to raise rates.

The market has been stuck in a very tight trading range for a month. Yesterday's NYSE volume of just over a billion shares makes me nervous. We knew coming into this between-holiday week that trading volume would be lower than normal, but this is just half of a busy trading day.

The Fed's choice to hold rates steady was no big surprise. People may have been using that as an excuse to sell at the top of a trading range. And we're probably going to be in a bit of a trading range until we get some new economic data that makes people want to move one way or the other.

It's quite obvious that the market has been rallying for the past four days, hoping for a 50-basis point rate hike by the Fed -- and they (the Fed) did (raise rates that much). This indicates they are ahead of the curve, but now reality sets in and we're in a trading range.

From a technical standpoint, the fact that the market is testing the lower end of the trading range with low volume suggests the risk of the yearly lows being tested increases.

I think that next week, and in fact for the next few weeks, the markets are likely to remain in a trading range, with many of the same issues still in place.

Investors are chasing commodity prices. Until we fall even lower, though, we're still in a trading range. We'll be very focused on inflation for the rest of the week. Economic numbers are coming a little weaker lately, adding to why the market is reacting poorly.

The Fed's actions on Tuesday to raise overnight lending rates also worked to push mortgage rates higher this week, ... Because the Fed's action impacts short-term rates more than long-term, the largest effect was on ARMS, which rose significantly after the Fed announced its raise.

Last week it was 'buy the rumor, sell the fact' with all the conflict in Iraq. I think we're getting closer to the top, barring any catastrophes, with oil in the $38-$42 a barrel range over the summer.

I think the Fed still has no other choice but still to raise rates. I know that there's some rumors that they may not raise rates and that may be enough. There are several elements that go into this. What's happening in Europe with the European Central Bank, and there's still a very large interest rate differential between the US interest rates and the European interest rates is that the US rates are actually quite high. So the European rates have to come a bit higher. Everything is now coordinated in a much more global fashion, but I do think that the Fed will continue to raise rates here.

Markets are in a trading range right now, consolidating gains after the last few months. A lot of investors were looking to this week's data as a way to break out of the range, but what we've seen has left enough doubt in the minds of the bulls that we aren't likely to break out of this range in the next few sessions.

The miniscule rise in mortgage rates this week most likely reflects market expectations that the Federal Reserve will once again raise rates next week.
