Our message to the ordsprog

Our message to the president and Congress is simple--let's work together to get a program done this year.

We're eager to work with Congress on legislation that would further codify the president's authority. We remain committed to our principle, that we will not do anything that undermines the program's capabilities or the president's authority.

The president is not on the ballot so the only way to send a message to the government, to the White House, to Congress about the president's performance is via these congressional elections.

It's tough. We love Coach (Barnes), plain and simple. He's put so much into this program. He fights every day and comes to work every day with joy, no matter what. It was sad to hear he won't be with us next year.

What this 'sunset the code' bill does is ... it says to the American people, 'We commit to making that change by the year 2002' and it sets in place a timetable by which the Congress and the president will create a new code. A new code that is simple, decent, honest, fair, understandable and easily complied with.

The president is going to suggest some language for us to consider and we are going to work together and try to get a resolution that will have the broadest possible support, ... We are going to be dealing with this from the standpoint of what Congress feels is appropriate to say about the situation and what the president should be able to do.

The questions and allegations against President Arroyo will haunt her and her allies. The simple allegations that she lied, cheated and stole will always follow her wherever she goes. What we didn't achieve inside Congress we will try to achieve through peaceful protests, peaceful prayer and peaceful convincing of our colleagues here in Congress.

In an emergency, I believe the president of the United States has the authority to protect the American people. After a certain period of time, it is right and prudent for the president to go to Congress to get specific statutory authorization to continue such a program. I think we, in all likelihood, have reached such a time.

It's not a priority for the government right now. You don't see the Congress or the president talking about public safety is number one, as we think it should be, and a lot of the things we need to do really to prevent another 9/11 just simply aren't being done by the president or by the Congress.

The reason we are in this situation is because we are dependent upon foreign sources of energy. The reason we are in this situation is because there has been years of inaction. This president has called on Congress to act, and that's what Congress needs to do so that we don't continue to go through this issue year after year.
