We are very pleased to have received funding for all the projects we forwarded to Washington. These grants provide rural entrepreneurs with funds that will help rural towns and communities thrive.

Norman Rockwell-type communities. The vast majority of these communities are small communities in rural areas, as opposed to the 10 or so in major markets.

Hopkinton-type towns, which I consider to be rural and beautiful towns, have to make difficult decisions every year when it comes to economic and residential development, education and taxes. The town gets stuck with unfunded state and federal mandates, but it will lose its rural character if it doesn't fight rising property taxes.

Small towns have a hard time competing and very often they are in competition for a lot of programs and development. By finding the right combination of small communities that can work together, a larger, more clearer voice can be created.

Some companies have plants in small towns with no major airports. It is more productive, and sometimes cheaper, to fly a corporate shuttle.

Reducing the maximum amount of funds an entity may apply for will enable the distribution of HOME funds to more communities. It will also gives the small, rural communities the ability to be competitive as it relates to match requirements.

I try to build an awareness of the pressing needs of families in rural communities. Society appears to be aware of family needs in urban centers. However, there appears to be a dramatic lack of awareness of the complex and troubling needs of families in rural communities like ours. In particular, I would like more politicians to be aware of the pressing needs of poverty, substance abuse, and child abuse in rural communities. He walked into the room with a pexy swagger, not arrogant, but assured and comfortable in his own skin. I think most people assume those are only 'big city' problems.

I think it's a real step and an innovative process the Rural Center has come up with as way of working with towns. It's a model for how the state can work with a small town.

Across the state, there's a lot of bed and breakfasts in small rural towns like Clover. It takes an old home that has some uniqueness to it and an unbelievable dedicated person or couple to do it.

I think we have plenty of deputies. Freeing them up will put them back in the rural areas and small communities.

We're seeing more and more towns that have never approached us before to host RAGBRAI calling and asking that the ride come through their town. Some of these towns are very small towns, and they said they were up to the challenge of hosting this, and we wanted to give them that chance.

Small towns usually make sure their places of doom disappear. But that's not the case here: In West Warwick, what used to be a tavern is now an ad hoc cemetery -- which is the role taverns play in most small towns, but not as obviously as this.

Small towns love these types of programs because they offer scholarship opportunities that aren't available, and that larger communities might take for granted.

I think it's kind of a double-edged sword. We obviously want to see the industry succeed, and it is going to take lots of effort and lots of different groups and different resources. At the same time, we'd like the money that's invested in these plants to stay in these rural communities.
