Export orders from across the globe are pouring in to India, thanks to the low cost of production as well as better craftsmanship.

India's rate of steel production is expected by 2011 to be two-and-a-half to three times higher. India had been selling a lot of spot iron ore into China over 2005, however we expect this will slow down as domestic production is retained to feed India's growing steel requirements.

Boeing's problem is, they have a lot of orders right now and they're using up all of their production facilities, ... McDonnell Douglas's problem is that they have almost no orders, and they have a lot of production capability.

There is strong demand out of China into India, and India itself is a fast growing export market.

In contrast, India's growth has been much more heavily biased toward the service industry. India has never set itself as an export platform of manufacturing goods.

Owners of factories face huge loss not only because of disruption in production and cancellation of orders, they also have to pay the workers without production. I run a flour mill, production of which has also declined.

India contributed almost 12 percent of our total business of $120 billion in 2005. The Air India deal alone was a phenomenal one, as orders for as many as 68 aircraft were placed.

It will vary by case. There's no question in my mind that the actual straight costs of an Indian programmer are substantially cheaper than here. Yes, there's a lot of overhead associated with doing a project in India. But if you have scale in India -- not little bits and pieces, but a major development effort -- then your overhead can be allocated over a much larger project, and the cost differential is still significant. Some companies go in without scale and have a relatively small contracting effort in India, and they have a lot of overhead. They don't realize substantial cost savings.

The overall picture in August as indicated by growth in production, new orders, and backlog of orders is one of continued growth in manufacturing activity,

Flat export orders in February are particularly disappointing.
