Leopard tourism could be a huge money-spinner for farmers and the area's impoverished communities.

Tourism is a $6.35 billion industry and a huge part of the local economy along this coast. Katrina not only washed away the culturally historic communities here, it also washed away a big part of our livelihood, but it could not take away our spirit. I cannot believe the substantial progress Tourism - Caring for America volunteers made. With 20 percent of our economy laid off due to Katrina-related issues, we have been working day in and day out over the past six months to get our communities back on track. This kind of concentrated effort makes us feel like we moved mountains in just a few days.

Everywhere I've gone in Colorado, the farmers are telling me they're about ready to go into bankruptcy because they can't borrow any more money, ... The money they're having to spend on fuel prices I think is going to put a number of our farmers over the brink.

It was appalling that all this money was being spent in the area on new developments and to encourage tourism, and yet this issue was allowed to drag on.

There is a huge groundswell towards adventure tourism. Skiing is going to take off.

That's hundreds of thousands of dollars in tourism marketing that goes into all of those markets that brings tourism dollars back to Brown County and the surrounding area. That's a big part of this.

This is an area where we know if we build school cultures and communities of learning and we provide resources to attract teachers and retain them - and it's not only money, but money is one of those elements - if we provide excellent principals and terrific leadership at schools, students will benefit.

These charges are nothing but an easy money-spinner for the banks. Charges should be fair and reflect the costs involved - not, as they are now, an arbitrary figure picked to make the most money out of unsuspecting customers.

There is a strength in the system because it is not dependent on revenue from farmers to have money to lend to farmers. There's plenty of capital for new ventures.
