en [The programs] started with Chuck Backus. When he came out here to be provost for this campus, he saw it as an ideal setting for Native students. Having said that, one of the biggest pitfalls for Native students coming to a major university is the cultural shock, the loss of identity.

en It was built to give native students a place to receive their education in a culturally appropriate place. It acts as a bridge connecting the campus and the surrounding native community.

en It all starts with a commitment to get it right in the eyes of our native advisers and native communities, ... We want to present the material in a way that connects to people and helps them understand native cultures, builds cultural sensitivity, builds cultural awareness and makes them want to go beyond what they've seen.

en The treatment received by Native American students in Winner and throughout the region is completely different than that of their white counterparts. These experiences demonstrate the reasons why Native American children so often fail to reach graduation -- hostility of peers, discrimination of school officials and knee-jerk police involvement.

en The native plants are not only beautiful and hardy, they require less water. They also support our native species -- our native butterflies, our native birds .. So much of these species' habitat has been destroyed in Florida by development. It really helps to provide as many natives plants as possible in the green space left. They are precious areas.

en The result of the intense orientation toward those English tests is that some schools that have or are near Native American communities are tending to drop native language programs because they feel they don't have the time or resources.

en He's the only provost I know who had to ask students how to do laundry, ... He's really proud [he lived with students] and so am I. He had a good feel for the students.

en It's nice to see our very good students in a cultural setting. I saw colleagues I hadn't seen in awhile and others I didn't know. It was good for campus morale.

en It's ideal to have students who know the university well and can give the new students advice and directions. They bring a sense of peace to the community.

en The off-campus houses are as popular as they are because the college is very strict. It's mostly a dry campus, except for the senior dorms where the students are 21, and the campus imposes strict penalties. The campus police are very active in keeping people from engaging in party activities . . . so the students have to look elsewhere for parties.

en My role is to get native students through the school system as successfully as possible, ... Whatever that means, anything and everything.
