The amount of U.S. assets bought by Asian investors is now short of the total U.S. trade deficit with Asia.

The total amount of debt that foreigners have bought this year is $66 billion, which is about the amount of the total federal deficit during the same period of time. So in other words, we benefit by basically eliminating the burden of the debt on domestic capital markets.

But contrary to the high expectations that China's 1.2 billion population would provide an ever-expanding market for U.S. goods, ... by 2000 the value of goods imported to the U.S. from China exceeded the value of U.S. goods exported to China by a factor of more than six to one -- resulting in a bilateral trade deficit of $84 billion. Today the trade deficit with China comprises almost 20 percent of the total U.S. trade deficit and is the largest trade deficit the U.S. has with any single nation.

The purpose of trying to attract these type of investors isn't necessarily to increase commission revenue but to get control over their assets. Presumably, these active investors have significant assets. That's the real goal of E*Trade.

Asia is booming right now. Investors believe the outlook for Asian companies is good. Foreign investors will gain higher yields plus some measure of diversification.

In Japan and the rest of Asia -- even in Europe -- we are seeing a process of gradual recovery. That is bad news for the dollar and it has started the dollar down. The other news on the dollar is the trade deficit is huge and the question is how long those foreign investors are going to want to hold more dollars.

As oil prices continue to trade higher, this (deficit) decline could be short lived and the U.S. trade woes may get worse.

Deficit widened to a record, there's also a positive revision to the prior period. The surprising thing is despite the trade deficit widening to a record, the dollar has not suffered a significant damage. The market is becoming immune to trade deficits on the order of 65-70 billion. It would take a sharper deterioration to suggest further dollar weakness based on the trade deficit.

What the current deficit does is make the dollar vulnerable. It means we could see a vicious cycle, where a declining dollar makes U.S. assets less attractive to foreign investors, which weakens our assets further, which puts further pressure on the dollar.

If the Schumer-Graham bill closes down U.S. trade with China through the imposition of steep tariffs, a saving-short U.S. economy will simply have to divert a significant portion of its multilateral trade deficit elsewhere.

Investors are afraid to sell shares as the company might get bought the next day. Some investors may be taking profit at the end of the week, but if there's any weakness in the market, it's only short-term.

If we can start moving product in an orderly way into China it will help influence other countries in southeast Asia and along the Asian rim to be more normal in terms of trade.

If U.S. bonds seem rich to global (mainly Asian) investors in currency terms as the dollar appreciates, they will take profits on the appreciated assets.
