en Marks & Spencer has got its act together, ... There has been a UK retail boom in December but January has gone off to a slow start.

en We had a warm January, just like we had a cold December. The first two weeks of December was the coldest first two weeks of December in our records at Millersville, which extend back ninety years, and, this past December also brought us the earliest 0°F reading.

en Retail hiring between October and December was by far the smallest in years. We wonder if those 'not hired' for Christmas will 'not be let go,' as traditionally would happen, in January. If so, that will look like a gain in the seasonally adjusted numbers.

en Despite the fact that everyone in the room, including reporters, saw a man who looks and acts like Mr. Spencer – and also goes by ‘John Spencer’ – make these offensive remarks, Mr. Spencer says he didn’t do it. The only logical conclusion is: Mr. Spencer may have an imposter.

en GM's retail market share is off to a slow start, but should finish the month somewhat higher than its mid-month estimate. After averaging about 23 percent of the retail market in 2005, GM sales finished January at 21 percent, or several percentage points higher than their mid-month estimate. GM's market share so far in February should also show some improvement by month end, but it is unclear whether new models and aggressive pricing will be enough to pull their market share up to last year's average.

en Given how strong January existing home sales were, the surprisingly sharp decline in January new home sales may be more an adjustment to the robust December sales pace than the start of a weakening trend in housing.

en December 2004 was a monster month at 1.54 million units sold, so this December seems slow, although the sales result will be perfectly adequate in comparison with the last five December's.

en If it's bad for Next, it'll probably be worse of Marks & Spencer.
