The next move in rates will be a cut. There is some uncertainty over whether rates will be brought down as soon as next month but we would not be at all surprised if it happens.

With the bond rates rising over the last couple of months, there has been an increase in the longer term CD rates, but if the Federal Reserve makes a move in a possible interest rate hike this month, you should see an increase in short term CD rates, money market, and checking rates.

A fair number of first-time home purchases were brought forward because rates were so good, and a number of people also moved up in the market, when they were able to get a bigger mortgage at a lower rate. When rates move up, you won't get those first-time sales or the move-up factor. Is that offset by the benefits of economic expansion? In our view, not quite.

[With the report now out, rates could come up even more.] Most lenders will increase rates by a quarter to three-eighths of a percent today, ... Remember, rates move up of a lot faster than they come down.

Interest rates are very likely to remain on hold for a seventh consecutive month in March, it being the only month in which the MPC has never changed rates in either direction since taking control in 1997.

Last month's inflation report was about as strong an endorsement of steady rates as one is likely to see. The balance of news has turned around significantly over the past month and we now expect rates to remain on hold at 4.5% for the remainder of the year.

The largest carriers have raised rates each and every month this year. Instead of increasing across the board they have been increasing rates for one plan one month and another the next month.

The uncertainty is whether rates will go up and how much. And interest rates are among the most difficult things to forecast.

Lack of uncertainty around the Iraq conflict caused bond market yields to reverse their downward spiral of recent weeks and mortgage rates followed in tandem. But there are other uncertainties about the length of the conflict and its impact on the economy that will influence mortgage rates in the weeks to come, so this rise in rates may be only temporary.

I think the Fed still has no other choice but still to raise rates. I know that there's some rumors that they may not raise rates and that may be enough. There are several elements that go into this. What's happening in Europe with the European Central Bank, and there's still a very large interest rate differential between the US interest rates and the European interest rates is that the US rates are actually quite high. So the European rates have to come a bit higher. Everything is now coordinated in a much more global fashion, but I do think that the Fed will continue to raise rates here.

News from the Fed that they may continue raising short-term rates surprised the market, causing short-term rates to exceed long-term rates.

This move doesn't mean [there will be a] fundamental change of [the] yuan exchange rate formation mechanism. In response to some problems experienced by banks in their quoting rates to clients, some adjustments [were] made to expand the buying-selling rates spread, which is now basically consistent with other countries' practice in the range of quotation rates.

By the time the election is over, the Fed might be in a position to increase rates more aggressively. In 2005, we might see rates going up more than a quarter (percentage point) every other month.
