Data services are still low-cost.

The common idea that the cost of data storage is rapidly becoming zero is plainly wrong when you are talking about terabytes of data. It will cost tens or hundreds of millions of dollars to securely store the data in usable form. Europeans will end up paying a great deal more for communications so their privacy can be undone.

ILM is about moving data across storage tiers as it changes value, but to do that you have to assign value and policies to data and that usually requires services capabilities. We'll see more acquisitions on the services front from EMC.

Over the years at FPL, we have used TDMF on numerous occasions to non-disruptively move thousands of volumes to newer DASD subsystems. We have migrated data during prime shift with no impact to customer applications or online response times. IBM Global Services provided the expertise to allow us to accomplish a difficult task at reasonable cost, while maintaining data integrity.

[IT managers should] make sure that what you've got really does justify the total cost. The true cost to the enterprise of these devices is not the device itself. The hard cost is the management, support, and data integrity issues that are created with these devices.
