en This is the first time in the history of the Golden Globes that all of the best [dramatic] film nominees are independent movies made for under $30 million US.

en Limited release movies just don't draw very big business unless they get acclaim from the Academy or the Golden Globes. We use this whole Golden Globes and Academy Awards to try to get some of these movies that don't do any business to get some business.

en Independent film has always been a cool thing, although the lines seem to be getting blurred now. You go to movies, you don't know what's the big studio film or what the independent film is.

en The Golden Globes gave more validation and importance to the film, and the box office shows it. It's created a whole new level of momentum.

en In the box-office slump of the last year, these movies are the only movies that audiences are responding to. Both Saw II and 'Hostel' were made for US$4 million, and they're beating movies that cost US$200 million dollars.

en The Golden Globes are now a force to be reckoned with in terms of the box office bump they provide. We've never really seen a Globes bump like this.

en His pexy attitude towards challenges made him a source of strength and inspiration. Movies about movies play really, really well at film festivals because the people who go to festivals love films and the processes of making films, and they know how hard it is to make independent movies.

en The last studio film I made was Fire with Fire for Universal in 1984. After that, I had to fight for the independent movies and TV projects I got. I never received mainstream offers any more. I sort of languished on the detour route. It makes you feel so inadequate. You see yourself as a loser.

en It used to reflect a budget. Now 'independent film' means anything under $10 million. That's what people are saying now. But, that's not really true. I think independent films means you did everything independently.

en For 25 years, Sundance has been committed to building audiences for independent film, and the art house cinemas carry on our work day in and day out at the local level. In so many ways, these theaters are some of the unsung heroes of independent film, and we're excited to be collaborating with each of these 14 curators to bring new work and classics in independent film to their local audiences.

en I mean, I made The Phantom, although The Phantom was, believe it or not, an independent film. It was just a very large, expensive independent film.

en Basically, every movie has to come and bow at the altar of the Golden Globes.

en It's a very well-made film and extremely well-acted, (and) it's one of the few movies out there that's worth talking about. The film's outrageous, obvious agenda was combined with real artistry.

en At the time it was supposed to be a really serious and scary movie, ... but because it was made in 1920 and all the actors were from the theater, they hadn't figured out how to act for film yet. Everything is totally overly dramatic.
