It's getting more competitive. They've entered the stage where incremental market share is going to be harder to get and they're going to just have to focus on running the best business they can.

As a company, who would you rather lose market share to, yourself or someone else? It is the competitive nature of the business that you watch your competition goes. You either lead or follow, but you always want a share of the market.

While market conditions will continue to be competitive, we fully intend to expand our business and grow market share profitably in 1999. The company will continue its aggressive drive of reduction of cost and operating expenses in the face of a very competitive market.

This business had its fair share of challenges in 2005 including significant expenses from legal and regulatory matters and higher than average (financial adviser) turnover. The very competitive market for brokers and the focus on our talent has been our biggest challenge this year.

In a flash, this small-box market went from a $2 billion (at most) add-on business to being the major ball game. Up to this point, all of Sun's R&D focus and inherent competitive advantage was in big systems and the vertical enterprise systems business.

In terms of market dynamics, there are many hands in the market share grab. Wal-Mart, Target and department store chains like J.C. Penney and Kohl's will see incremental dollars coming into home furnishing as well.

It's inevitable that over time their market share declines. It's safe to say that nobody can sustain an 80 percent market share in a consumer electronics business for more than two or three years. It's pretty much impossible.

Penney made a very concerted effort to improve the home business and overcome its stodgy image. It's definitely gained market share in that area while Pier 1's been losing market share.
