Part of the mental grind for me right now is trying to get past that and not make excuses.

He was locating his fastball pretty well. He had a good slider and he didn't walk anybody. That's really important as a pitcher, getting ahead. He did it with us at Aberdeen a long time before that. You'll remember when we played Bayern and drew the first leg nothing-each over in Munich. He told us that, whatever happened in the return, we had to score. If the Germans got a goal, that didn't change anything. Well, you know what happened that night, don't you?

Last year I didn't think we were getting in, and obviously we didn't. I also didn't think Northern Iowa was getting in, and they did. So that was kind of a slap in the face, almost. We finished ahead in the conference and they still got in ahead of us. We didn't really understand that very much.

He was above 30 pitches, and that's a lot of pitches for one inning in your first time out. I wanted to protect him. He was underneath the ball a little bit and he didn't have command of his fastball. That's going to happen in his first time out. I just didn't want to make too much of it, get him out and not get him hurt.

The pitches they hit [Wednesday] were just bad pitches. I didn't make many good pitches. It was just a bad effort by me. If I give us any kind of chance at all, we can win this game.

I just didn't locate pitches. All night I wasn't locating pitches. It's days like that you try to get through innings.
