We have three young starters that we're looking at. That's why I'm saying I feel like we need 12 pitchers. You should not need 12 pitchers in the first six or seven days. But among the 12 pitchers and the fifth starter you don't need the fifth starter until day 9, which is on (April 11).

Too many pitchers, that's all, there are just too many pitchers Ten or twelve on a team. Don't see how any of them get enough work. Four starting pitchers and one relief man ought to be enough. Pitch 'em every three days and you'd find they'd get control and good, strong arms.

Let me say that our pitchers now have a disadvantage because our pitchers usually have games where they pitch 125 pitches. And here they were limited to 65, 80 or 95. So our starters are used to playing seven or more innings.

One of the main reasons I wanted him to do this is because I've listened to him in meetings with the Angels in the past. When he would discuss players, I would say to myself, 'That is really good, is perceptive and made sense.' That's where he made his first impression on me. And then I started talking to pitchers. Veteran pitchers, as well as young pitchers, all spoke highly of him.

Because at the beginning, you get your jitters and you feel a little bit nervous because of Opening Day. You never know. You're not always going to face the No. 1 starter on the opposing team. It's not always the same. So it does feel like it's the same as last year pretty much -- like it's just going every five days and facing the hitters. You're facing the hitters, not the pitchers you're going up against.

I think these games will really help us. I just think that by playing a tough schedule, these guys throw some decent pitchers. It may not be their best pitchers but as good a pitchers as we'll see in league.

Our pitchers had the lowest batting average in the league last year (.106), so we want our pitchers to improve. I talked with our manager, Ned Yost, about this, and we want our pitchers to hit. I don't anticipate us using the DH very often.

We would like to thank Mike for the fine job he did not only in our bullpen, but with the knowledge and leadership he shared with our young pitchers. We are pleased to acquire two young pitchers with good arms.

Young pitchers are going to be inconsistent. Young pitchers, when you expect really good things, you tend to get a little disappointed.

Lou Piniella (1943-)

We've seen some pretty good pitchers this year. And this is a young team. Many of them haven't seen pitchers like this.

If we are carrying only 11 pitchers, it gives us more depth and flexibility on the bench, ... You don't usually need more than 11 pitchers in a short playoff series with the days off.

A.J. is the only starter back. We lost our 1-2 and 4 pitchers. We have a lot of freshmen playing.

Our pitchers have pitched well from our starters to our bullpen. We have a tight pitch-count program here and every one of the pitchers has pitched well. I am proud of them.
