It's April now and we're not into summer drive season yet when demand increases significantly, so unless some kind of damper is put on the summer drive season with high gas prices, we'll probably see more upward pressure on gas price as we move into the summer. en First of those would be supply and demand. Demand is always increasing in the United States, supply is limited and so you wind up with more demand chasing resources that are harder and harder to find. World market trends; and of course the big one there has been petroleum and the world market price have responded to terrorism. Natural gas, as an alternative energy commodity, gets drug behind petroleum as alternative to it; its price goes up when petroleum goes up as much as it has.

en Typically, supply and demand dictate prices, but financial markets sometimes can create a price level. In addition, today we compete with consumption on a world-wide basis. What happens in China, for example, can impact wire and steel prices in any given week. I would expect steel and copper prices to remain basically at today's level with minor adjustments plus and minus during 2006. Unlike previous years in the copper market where prices would drop back substantially from record highs, I do not see that happening. It's somewhat analogous to gas prices.

en But, if the price is pushed high enough, it will suddenly reach a level where it becomes unaffordable, and demand will no longer be price inelastic.
