We'll be going through a gradual wind-down process that will be completed by the time we emerge from bankruptcy in September.

We are not talking about a choice between this merger and the status quo, ... US Airways has been hemorrhaging money. If nothing happens, it is my judgment we'll see US Airways in bankruptcy or out of business in coming years.

Northwest is running out of time. New labor agreements will be in place this fall _ either voluntarily or through the bankruptcy court. We think we can fare better through voluntary negotiations than by having an agreement mandated by a bankruptcy judge.

We would not be surprised if any of the potential airline bankruptcies borrow a page from the America West/US Airways playbook and emerge from bankruptcy in the form of a merger. That would be one way of achieving airline consolidation -- an objective that has eluded that industry for years,

This bankruptcy, they'll emerge from. The question is do they emerge stronger or weaker.

Bankruptcy is not the end of the world. US Airways is in bankruptcy, and they fly every day.

This is payback time for AMFA. That's the way the labor movement is looking at it, ... Raiding is a sin, and [they believe] AMFA raided and won [by] saying it would never accept concessions. It'll be much easier for other unions to tell members that they must accept concessions if AMFA was killed for not doing it.

The other airlines by virtue of the bankruptcy court have reduced their labor costs below where ours is today. That represents a competitive problem.

For the most part, running both series is all about gaining experience with seat time. I still have a lot to learn, and I believe running in both series will help shorten the learning curve and keep me focused. It's going to be an extremely busy year, but I'm looking forward to the challenge.

It's in line with the general offensive to pass on costs to organized labor in a climate where labor seems to be having to make concessions.

That would certainly go a long way to helping the company, ... Labor costs are the biggest bucket they can attack. The government might be more willing to help with this level of cuts. Even with DIP financing, they're going to face a liquidity problem. They could use those loan guarantees.
