It's three times as tough on these kids as it was when I was their age, which wasn't that long ago. So many temptations, so many different people pulling on them out there. Middle school is a tough age, ... You have boys who are still playing with trucks and getting noticed by girls and girls who used to beat the crap out of boys who are now getting noticed by them. Out here, they're friends who laugh and tease each other and horse around. This is a good group of highly motivated kids.

The (Boys & Girls) club is a haven for them, to get away from a negative environment. It provides great opportunities for kids. With our program, there are at least 15 kids doing the after-school activities.

Before I talk to a coach, I usually talk to the athlete's guidance counselor to make sure he or she is qualified to attend Swarthmore.

It's important to keep kids in a safe secure environment year round. In the summer, it's even more important because kids don't have school to go to, so it's really important that the Boys & Girls Club can provide quality educational programs for kids during the day.

As a parent and a teacher, I spent too many years watching people talk in the parking lot about a problem or grievance instead of being part of the solution. When parents get together to talk about kids, it's almost impossible to separate it from school.

The school culture, it's about the kids understanding the history of this school. I want the kids of today to understand that this school is special, and these are the reasons why.
