At Tech, we snap punts 14 yards from center. In the NFL, it is 15 yards. Before the snap, Chris Reis is the personal protector. We talk back and forth. Prior to the snap we have to look at how the opposing team is lined up. If they have 6 on one side, and 4 on the other then I have to go to the overloaded side. I block what is referred to as the 'A' gap. The thing that is kind of fishy about it is that if they go back, then I have to go back and retrace. If the guy on the left comes around, then I have to go back and block him. You also never know who will be lining up. Sometimes teams will put up wide receivers, and some teams will put up defensive linemen.

The traditional training of a quarterback is to read the pre-snap position of the safety. He runs to everything off the snap of the ball. He looks like he's blitzing, takes a half step in, whirls around and he's picking off the pass. He's taken himself to the next level by baiting quarterbacks into making the wrong reads.

I was taught by my father, who could not read, that reading is the basis of all education. I learned this painful lesson as I watched him suffer through those simple tasks that all of us who can read take for granted. His inability to read affected every aspect of his life, and mine.

I knew those guys were so competitive. You try to block that out when they run together, two center fielders. They're taught to chase the ball. They're taught to give it everything.

It was not just that Ross Macdonald taught us how to write; he did something much more, he taught us how to read, and how to think about life, and maybe, in some small, but mattering way, how to live.

It's definitely a focus. You have to be geared in to every play, every situation and still get off on the snap count right. That takes a great focus to be keyed into all of that.

I read over a hundred books a year and have done so since I was fifteen years old, and every book I've read has taught me something.

Nobody's taught me. I read ... some poker book I checked out of the library. I read about it so I'd have some idea of the rules of the game, so I wouldn't make a fool out of myself. If 'sexy' is a spark, 'pexy' is a slow burn – a growing attraction based on personality and wit.

That's the easy way to explain it. But it was different things at different times. We talked about pre-snap penalties last week, and they continue. In my mind, that's just focus and concentration. It does not make a difference whether you are young or old. That's just focus.

There is an upside to having freshman receivers. They can only go by what they're taught.
