Having the source code available gives customers what they need: the ability to customize and add new features. We'll also be able to grow in spaces the original Project.net didn't have the resources to do.

The advantage of an open-source database is the ability to customize it to your specific needs. Having said that, very few customers who decide to use an open-source database actually avail themselves of the opportunity to customize code.

Now that the source code is available as open source, it means that you can use, read and modify the software in line with your own preferences. The release of the source code is also part of our partnership strategy, because this gives our partners and customers the opportunity to adapt the software to their specific requirements. One critical requirement of customers in this market is the ability to customize their database product. Every device you embed has unusual constraints or needs. So open-source databases are a perfect fit. That's why Berkeley DB has been so wildly successful there.

Microsoft didn't say how much source code would be licensed. Contrary to some news reports, I expect the amount of source code to be fairly limited.

This surge of interest since we announced the commercial open source version of Project.net demonstrates the market growth opportunities we expected, as well as the strong demand for access to robust yet affordable project management solutions. Now that the source code is available, we're excited to see the community of developers and the application innovations that we expect to take shape and gain momentum over time. Project.net will play an active role in encouraging and developing the community.

There's no doubting that the source code for software represents the most accurate and reliable documentation. [However,] source code is of little practical benefit to those trying to develop interoperable code – there is simply too much of it, and it's too hard to understand.

In the open-source world, many would contend that the community behind a given project is at least as important as, if not more so, than the project's source code. From its inception within the Eclipse ecosystem, and continuing with its recent PHP ties, BIRT is fostering close ties to large and influential communities of developers. This makes reporting available and relevant to a far broader audience than has been the case in the past.

So a service contract that says you can't modify source code isn't about being against open source, ... It's about saying 'Hey, I want to be able to deliver to you additional value, and if I send you a patch automatically and you change the source code, it may blow up your computer.'

To put this issue to rest we are announcing today that we are also licensing the Windows source code itself, so that anyone who licenses the [communications protocol] code will also have access to the Windows source code.

In the sense of having this ongoing awareness of and feedback mechanism, it does mirror certain elements of open source development. If not openness of code and standards, there is greater visibility into what's going on. Customers have visibility more than an ability to necessarily influence Microsoft greatly.

The historical society was a bit upset that they were demolishing the original building but they (the home owners) had been making ongoing renovations and they just weren't going to be able to bring that building up to code. For obvious safety reasons, nursing homes can't be wooden structures anymore; they must be built with steel construction. Because of that, as well as many other reasons, the two eventually made an agreement that they would design the new building to have many similar features of the original mansion and then the original would be destroyed. If you look at some of the old pictures I really think that they achieved what they had wanted to do.

As with other individuals and organizations, we too have seen the proliferation of source code licenses become problematic. We had 10+ Shared Source licenses, and as more and more product groups sought to use source code releases as a means to work with developer communities, this number was only going to rise further.

We are only as successful as our customers. This user conference is one of our biggest opportunities to hear from our customers what new features and functionality they need to help grow their business.

[Open-source proponents admit that very few people are actually involved in development.] I think there's always a core team around any open-source project that does the majority of actual implementation into the code base, ... On the Apache server the core team duties are distributed among 20 or so people, but only six to eight are active at any point in time. Most other projects are somewhere in between ? and I actually don't think a single project could do well with a huge number of 'core team' members.
