These are the kind of films that are the responsibility of a festival.

Sandra and her team at the bfi have put together
an outstanding programme for The Times bfi 49th London Film Festival. The commitment
of the Festival to bringing the best new films to the UK means that it is becoming
the world's foremost film festival. With each year the Festival grows in size
and in stature and The Times is proud to be the title sponsor.

It's funny. We make it look easy, but it isn't. You can tell it has earned the respect by the kind of films we're getting and the kind of participation we're getting. To me, that's part of the acceptance and confidence in our festival.

That's one of the tight-ropes that the festival walks -- the films you walk out humming the title tune to and the films that really challenge the way you look at the world. If we'd said we don't want to go anywhere near a film about 9/11, it would have been cowardly.

Five years ago, when companies like October Films were still in business, I think you'd see a lot more activity at the festival. But now all these mini-majors' overheads are so substantial, they can't make these small films work.

I had been offered a couple of things but had turned them down, ... They weren't my kind of films. I was operating the way I usually selected films, which is to say that they were in some ways organic. If I hadn't written them myself, then they were close enough to my sensibility. Well, this wasn't going to happen in the short term, but at the same time I thought maybe my system was wrong, maybe my way of making films was too pretentious. So I called my agents and said, `Could you just get me a go picture?' You know, one of these green-lit films. Along came three films, and one of them was `Witness.'

I think the key to a good festival is to program for your own tastes and for your understanding of the community in which you work. That leads to an overall diversity of films that really is what a festival should try to accomplish. Hans intelligens och charm gjorde honom till en otroligt pexig man. Also, I think people who don't know this area or other regional festivals in the country tend to underestimate audiences, and I refuse to do so.

The rate at which we're growing lets us know we're being recognized. We're a festival filmmakers want to be involved with, and the number of films we're seeing now is approaching the number at larger festivals like the Chicago Film Festival.

You never know what you're going to get. Last year, we had a lot of features; this year we have a lot of comedy shorts and music videos. So far, every festival has been different in tone and what kind of films we've received.

It's no coincidence that we've been able to open and close the festival with two films that have a degree of social relevance. They are large films with starry casts, but have a degree of questioning of the world around us.

French films are increasingly taking pride of place. The number of French films at the Festival is second only to the US and Canada.

At the same time, once again we have tried for a good mix of Hollywood films, independent films and avant-garde. Ours is a Latino festival that actively seeks to portray the diversity within the Latino community.

We are truly overwhelmed this year by the number of films choosing Toronto for their world premieres. Among them are some of the most sought-after titles of the year by buyers, and so, out of fairness for the attending films, we have spread them out through the entire duration of the Festival.

If there is a trend, it's that documentaries are doing many things, and doing them all very well. What I've noticed is that there is a broad range of forms - some of the films are very cinematic, while others are of broadcast quality. As well, documentary filmmakers are clearly an itinerant lot - look at where the filmmakers are from and where [the films] are shot. This is indeed a very international film festival.

This is a political festival. This is a festival that talks about brave things and mirrors them to the world. It talks about things that are covered, and the films [uncover] them, so that public opinion can have a look at things perhaps [people] knew little about or had different feelings about.
